TODAY YOU CAN TAKE
CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE

ARE YOU SHOCKED AT THE TITLE?
YOU SHOULDN'T BE. YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON
WHO CAN ACTUALLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

In 1992, a person I highly respect startled me with the following statement: "Herb, you are the only person in your life who can make a change in your life. No one else has that power unless you allow them."
I sat across the desk from him and didn't flinch. Inside I was laughing like crazy. I wondered, "Who does he think he is? That's absurd for anyone to say, let alone think."
Then over the course of about five months, this amazing counselor guided me into a whole new realm of reason and responsibility. I finally understood that he was not only correct in his initial assessment of my problem, he had offered me an amazing opportunity at forty-seven to totally change my whole outlook on life.
Here I sit at my desk. It is 2019. And my life has totally changed. One can say, "Yeah, you just grew up more. You're so much older and wiser now." I would have to admit to the older part. But wiser? I am wiser because I began to work on myself in 1992. Slowly, I have made significant changes in my whole outlook on life, my philosophy of life, and my relationships with those around me. And I am thoroughly convinced that anyone who truly wants and is willing to work at it can make their life into just what they want and not what other people want for them.
Let me say at the outset that I am not a psychologist or a counselor of any kind. I am simply a man who discovered the secret to success in life (success not meaning "money," "position," or "fame.") I mean in my eyes, I can truly say that over my life time I have succeeded at those things I wanted to accomplish. I thoroughly enjoyed studying and learning new things. I also discovered that I learn best under a structured environment. So, along the way, I have earned six college degrees in six different fields (although some are tangentially related.) I pursued two parallel careers as a full-time professor for nearly 35 years and a US Army Reserve officer. And all these things I did while being faithful to my family, my church, and my principles.
So, when I say that you can change your life into what you want to be, I am speaking not only from intellectual pursuit, but also from personal real-life experience. My partner of 51 years will tell you the same thing. Plus she would say that she would not have stayed with me unless I had made some significant changes nearly thirty years ago. And I would have blamed her. I was a mess.
Today I write. In fact, this website is full of things I have written about enjoying life and making my life what I want from it. I invite you to enter and enjoy the fruits of my labors. Please feel free to read the articles and blog posts. And, if you enjoy and get something from reading those, please purchase copies of my books. I believe they are priced well below their value as an incentive to get you interested in what I have to say. In my books, there is no fluff, no generalizing, and no philosophizing. You'll find simple, down-to-earth, practical, real-life examples and suggestions that you can put into your daily life right away.
BUT, let me warn you. I was thirty-seven years old when I started. I am now seventy-four. I'm still in the process of becoming what I want to be. I'm happy with the progress I have made. But, I continue to find elements of my being that need to be corrected. Oh, and my lovely bride makes it her job to point out those things that I miss. But, I love that. Even my two children (a successful business man and a lawyer) both contribute to the failings they see. But, then they are also working on themselves to become the best person they can be.
REMEMBER: The process will take time. Just enjoy the ride toward being a much better you that you can truly love.
